- There is no reason for running anywhere at Boys State except for during recreation time activities which require it. This is particularly true for the inside of buildings (including the dorm) and any area which is wet.
- The schedule for Boys State is hectic and demands a great deal from each delegate and staff member. To get the maximum advantage from the program, everyone needs to be rested. Consequently, "lights out" means EVERYONE goes to bed and to sleep. Late hours and early mornings will take their tolls.
- There will be some standing in line, please be patient and show every courtesy. No one will go hungry and nothing will start until everyone is present.
- If you question whether something should be done, the chances are it shouldn’t. Ask a BLUE SHIRT!
- Anyone wearing a BLUE or RED SHIRT should be treated with the same respect and acknowledged authority as your own counselors. Listen to them … they are here to make this program work for you.
- This program is, by definition, more than just Oklahoma Government. It is an exercise in AMERICANISM. Therefore, if you have difficulty with the concepts of patriotism, saluting the Flag, or honoring God and County, then this may not be your week. See your counselor immediately!
- There will be some classroom work. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn as much as you can from the instructors. Some information will be immediately beneficial, while some may be beneficial in the long term. Listen, take notes, and, above all, be courteous. Don’t forget the quiz at the end of each class and the final exam at the end of Boys State.
- Part of the purpose of Boys State is to acquaint nearly 800 of the most outstanding young men in the state with AMERICANISM, OKLAHOMA GOVERNMENT, PATRIOTISM, and each other. Get involved! Be par of the Government Practicum and the recreation programs. Meet people. Serve your city. In short, Boys State is, in miniature, much of the life you can expect as an adult. This is a wonderful opportunity to practice.
- Please take advantage of the Bank. Don’t leave valuables (cameras, radios, money, etc.) in your room. Rooms cannot be locked … give anything of value to your counselor for safe keeping.
- Since you are already a Senator or Representative, much of your experience here will happen in the legislature. Write bills, introduce them and debate. If you are unsure about how to do these things, listen in class and talk with your couselors.
- Listen and be courteous to all speakers. Some of the finest minds in the state and national government will be here to visit you. Also, on the Boys State staff are men of recognized courage, dedication, and ability. Listen to them as well. Drain these people of the information you need to become successful.
- Recreation is an important part of Boys State. People who work hard mentally need to release tension through other activities. We provide competition in basketball, volleyball, softball, and flickerball. There will be a tennis tournament if enough are interested and the week will close with the Boys State Games. We also have a choir, band, newspaper, and Academic Bowl competition. There should be something for everyone … participate!
- Meet people … shake hands … get name recognition, if you want to win a nomination and an election.
- If, for any reason, you are not happy, see your counselor. He will be able to help you solve the problem. Likewise if you are injured or unwell (even just a headache or allergy) , see your counselor and he’ll get you the proper care from our medical staff.
- We do all things together. There are no optional activities except recreation. WATCH YOUR SCHEDULE … BE ON TIME.
- City elections are our first opportunity to become involved with politics. Seek your party’s support for an office or seek to be appointed to one of the city offices.
- In case of bad weather, fire, or natural disaster, instructions will be given by your Civil Defense Director and city counselors who will coordinate all activities. THERE ARE NO FIRE DRILLS AT BOYS STATE.
- Your uniform is pants, the Boys State "T" shirt, and name badge. These will be worn at all times (shirt tucked in trousers) except during recreation and while on the dorm floor. Sandals are permitted only during recreation. Authorized caps are always removed indoors except for the Legion and SAL caps which are considered part of a uniform.
- Read this manual carefully as it contains valuable information about the program.
- Feel free to ask any BLUE or RED SHIRT a question. The staff is here to help make Oklahoma Boy State a week to remember, but a "Week to Shape a Lifetime."
